| Course Description |
| In this course, the design approaches of the architects which constitute the important thresholds in housing design from modern
era to Greys, New York Five and contemporary architecture will be examined. Firstly, the meaning of house will be described,
then various housing types through a typological categorization will be studied with examples from each category. It will be
discussed how famous architects conceptualized the main design idea of the house form, along with the relations of
house/housing with the surrounding urban context, its interior space organization, facade composition, structural system and
selected materials. Housing designs will be discussed with the themes such as interior/exterior space, public/private space,
landscape/building relations, natural light and colour usage, ecologic designs, fragmented/total space, layering in facade,
flexibility, modularity, mobility, earthquake resistancy and tailored for disabled. The most important architects and their house
designs which will be examined are the followings: Gerrit Rietveld-Schroder House, Frank Lloyd Wright-Waterfall House, Le
Corbusier-Villa Savoye, Mies Van Der Rohe-Farnsworth House, Robert Venturi-Vanna Venturi House; Peter-Eisenman House I,II,
III, IV and Checkpoint Charlie House, John Hejduk-Wall House 2, Richard Meier-Smith House, Charles Gwathmey-Gwathmey
House and Studio, Michael Graves-Hanselman House, Frank Gehry-Gehry House, Mario Botta- Bianchi House, Herzog & De
